In The Town: Yuna

Monday, February 3rd, 2014

Yuna came to Chicago last week, and gave a great performance. She announced to the crowd that it was her first sold out show, and I expect there are plenty more in her future. She is a great vocalist, and extremely talented songwriter. She also showed versatility by doing a Frank Ocean cover during her headlining set. Incidentally, her opening act, Jarell Perry, reminds me of Frank Ocean. If you have a chance to see Yuna live, she is a must-see.

In The Town: Yeezus Tour

Thursday, December 19th, 2013

Kanye West’s Yeezus Tour invaded Chicago for a second night yesterday, and he put on an incredible show. This is my first time seeing ‘Ye solo (I previously saw him on the Watch the Throne Tour). He is the best hip-hop artist to see live, hands down. I felt like I was watching theatre as opposed to a hip-hop concert. Every detail from the lights to the orchestration of his dancers combined to create these poses or looks that if frozen could easily be taken for a piece of art.

This tour also gave doubters of Yeezus, the album, to experience the album live. I am in the minority of fans who actually loved the album, and consider it to be a masterpiece. When ‘Ye performed the songs live, I believe it made many in attendance want to take another listen to the album. In addition to Yeezus, ‘Ye touched on hits from all of his solo albums. Nearly thirty songs later, I had completely forgotten that Kendrick Lamar ever performed as the opening act. It was that good. Go see the Yeezus Tour!

In The Town: John Legend

Wednesday, November 13th, 2013

This weekend I got the opportunity to watch one of my favorite artists perform live! John Legend is one of the best talents in music, and his live performances are always memorable. This weekend was no exception. Tamar Braxton served as the opening act, and she did a great job as well. John Legend is a must-see when he comes to your city.

In The Town: Iron & Wine

Saturday, September 28th, 2013

Last night I saw Iron & Wine at the Chicago Theatre. The show was amazing! Iron & Wine was backed by a 13 piece band that added an incredible stage presence to his performance. He also went solo for portions of the show. It was in these times where his talent became evident, and I found myself wishing the band, as incredible as they were, would not return so that I could continue to appreciate his ability to captivate an audience independently. Iron & Wine is a must-see in concert!

In The Town: Kendrick Lamar at Lollapalooza Aftershow

Tuesday, August 6th, 2013

Over the weekend I had the opportunity to check out Kendrick Lamar at an Official Lollapalooza Aftershow held at the Aragon Ballroom. Opening acts on the ticket included BJ the Chicago Kid and Baauer. The show was good overall. If I have to make one complaint it would be that Kendrick’s set wasn’t long enough. He was on stage for about an hour. Meanwhile, Baauer was on stage for what seemed like an eternity. Kendrick didn’t hit the stage until 1am. I’m not sure how Kendrick performing earlier in the day may have impacted the Aftershow, but he gave a good, energetic performance.

In The Town: Norah Jones

Thursday, October 11th, 2012

Norah Jones is one of my five favorite artists spanning any genre. Having the opportunity to see her live two nights ago was quite the treat. I have always wanted to see her live, and she did not disappoint. She an amazing talent, and I enjoyed the atmosphere of her show at the Chicago Theatre. If she comes to your town, go see her!

In The Town: Kevin Hart

Sunday, September 30th, 2012

Kevin Hart’s Let Me Explain Tour rolled into Chicago last night at the United Center, and I was on hand. Hart runs a tight show that prohibits calling, texting, photos, recording, or any other mobile device functions as enforced by event security patrolling the venue for violators…armed with flashlights. So, the above picture taken before the show began was the best I could do. The show was very funny. There were three opening comedians who all did a great job as they set the stage for Hart. For a comedian to do an arena tour says a lot for their popularity, and Hart is certainly the biggest comedian in the world right now. If he comes to your city, you should go! WARNING: Your ribs and/or cheeks will be in pain afterwards.

In The Town: Silversun Pickups

Tuesday, September 25th, 2012

I had the pleasure of catching the Silversun Pickups this past weekend when they performed in Chicago at the Aragon Ballroom! SSPU is on my shortlist of favorite artists, and I have been dying to see them live for several years. They did not dissapoint! Bassist Nikki Monninger is on maternity leave as she is expecting twins, so Sarah Negahdari of The Happy Hollow filled in and got a warm reception from an impressively enthusiastic crowd. After performing a stellar set, they returned for an encore that culminated with Well Thought Out Twinkles. The supporting acts, Atlas Genius, and School of Seven Bells were also good.

Janelle Monáe Live!

Thursday, September 23rd, 2010

I have a list of artists that I want to see perform live. Janelle Monáe was right at the top of the list. Luckily I got to see her last night. I must say that she is as good as I expected. She has incredible stage presence and a great voice. Seeing her live truly is an event, an experience. As performers go I believe she is right next to Beyoncé and Lady Gaga for best live shows by a solo female artist. If you have the chance to see her do it! Don’t believe me? Spin recently ranked her tour with Of Montreal #4 for the Fall. So check her out and be amazed. Check out her performance on the Late Show with Dave Letterman after the jump.

Side Note: Used my BlackBerry Torch 9800 for all the night’s photos(like the one above). Not a bad camera, not one of the phones finer features though.
